Getting professional support can prevent things from getting worse. Speaking to a GP and looking into counselling and therapy are two good places to start. Sometimes, a young person might feel like there is pressure to drink or take drugs when they do not want to. Friends or peers might tell them to do it or make them feel bad if they don’t. They might also feel under pressure to explain why they aren’t joining in. This can be particularly difficult for teenagers and young people, because it’s often a time when ‘fitting in’ feels really important.

The latest information on drug dependence in England is reported in the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2014 on the National Archives website. A total of 3.1% of people aged 16 years or over showed signs of dependence on drugs, including 2.3% who showed signs of dependence on cannabis only, and 0.8% had signs of dependence on other drugs.
